Fluorite

The fluorite specimens shown below are all available for purchase, with a wide selection of colors, origins, and crystal forms. This diversity makes it easy to compare specimens based on your own criteria, whether it is color, transparency, or overall crystal balance.

Fluorite specimens are displayed below.

Fluorite, also referred to in French as fluorine, is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride (CaF₂). Widely represented in mineral collections, it is appreciated both for the regularity of its crystal forms and for the wide range of its natural colours. This diversity of appearance makes fluorite a particularly engaging mineral to observe, compare and select.

This category brings together all our currently available fluorite specimens, across all colors. Subcategories by color allow you to refine your selection according to your criteria.

This variety implies specific criteria of observation and comparison, which collectors take into account when assessing and choosing a specimen.

Crystallising in the cubic crystal system, fluorite most commonly forms well-defined crystals with cubic or octahedral habits. Well-developed cubes, sharp octahedra and crystals with clearly defined edges are especially valued for the clarity with which their structure can be read. The sharpness of edges, the regularity of crystal faces and the overall visual balance of the specimen are important elements, along with transparency or internal zoning. With a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale, fluorite remains a relatively soft mineral, which explains both the finesse of certain crystal forms and the need to handle specimens with care.

Fluorite and fluorine: the same mineral species

The terms fluorite and fluorine refer to a single and identical mineral species. While fluorite is the standard term used in English and scientific literature, fluorine is more commonly used in French. On this page, both terms are intentionally associated to reflect existing usages and to facilitate search, without any mineralogical distinction between them.

Colours, variations and selection criteria for collectible fluorites

Fluorite is known for its particularly broad range of colours: green, purple, blue, yellow, colourless, as well as intermediate or zoned hues. These variations are related to impurities, crystal lattice defects or the geological history of the deposit. For collectors, colour is often a primary criterion of selection, but it should not be considered in isolation.

The quality of a fluorite crystal is also assessed through:

  • the definition of crystal forms,
  • the condition of edges and faces,
  • transparency or translucency,
  • the overall visual balance of the specimen,
  • mineral associations, frequently with calcite, baryte, quartz or galena, which enhance both the aesthetic and mineralogical interest of a specimen.

For this reason, this category is structured into colour-based subcategories, making it easier to compare fluorites with similar characteristics while maintaining a clear overview of the natural diversity of this mineral.

Provenances and notable localities

The fluorite specimens offered originate from well-known deposits worldwide, notably in China, England, Spain and France, with historic occurrences in the Auvergne region. Each locality produces fluorites with distinct characteristics, whether in terms of colour, crystal form or mineral associations. Provenance thus provides an additional reference point for placing a specimen in its geological context and appreciating its individuality within a collection.
