Nigeria holds a distinctive place in this selection thanks to the recently discovered fluorites from the Jalingo area in Taraba State. The specimens presented here come mainly from this locality and were extracted in 2023. Several stand out for their blue-green to violet hues, their twinned crystals and, above all, their associations with quartz. On some pieces, quartz partially covers the fluorite, elegantly highlighting its volumes, relief and colour contrasts. The category therefore includes several particularly remarkable specimens, including high-quality pieces capable of becoming important additions to a mineral collection.

Fluorites from Jalingo: colours, twinning and associations with quartz

The fluorites from Jalingo display considerable visual richness. Specimens from this locality are particularly known for their cubic crystals, sometimes twinned, as well as for colour zoning that may combine blue-green, grey-blue or violet tones. Depending on the lighting, some pieces can reveal subtle changes in colour that further enhance the depth of the crystallization.

The association with quartz is one of the most striking features of several specimens presented in this category. Sometimes surrounding the fluorite crystals and sometimes partially covering them, the quartz creates contrasts of texture and light that particularly enhance the fluorite. Some pieces also include pyrite or chalcopyrite, adding further relief and complexity to the overall specimen.

Jalingo: a recent discovery in Taraba State

The fluorite deposit associated with the Jalingo mine in northeastern Nigeria was identified in 2022, with mining beginning in early 2023. The first specimens from this discovery appeared on the international mineral market that same year, notably at the Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines and Munich mineral shows.
