About this specimen

This fluorite from Nigeria is distinguished by a particularly visible association with pyrite, occurring as numerous small golden crystals scattered across much of the specimen.

The fluorite forms an intergrown group of cubic crystals, with colors ranging from green to very dark green depending on crystal thickness and lighting. Some faces are largely exposed, while others are dotted with or partially covered by pyrite, creating a marked contrast between the darker, translucent fluorite surfaces and the metallic luster of the pyrite.

The irregular distribution of the pyrite is especially distinctive: in some areas it forms dense small clusters, while other crystal faces show only a few isolated crystals. The video makes it possible to follow this distribution across the different surfaces of the specimen and to observe the variations in transparency and color of the fluorite.

An association of fluorite and pyrite

Fluorite (CaF₂) and pyrite (FeS₂) display very different characteristics here: broad crystalline volumes for the fluorite and numerous small, bright crystals for the pyrite. This contrast in size, color and luster gives the specimen a particularly distinctive appearance.
