Sphalerite, traditionally known as blende, is a zinc sulfide mineral with the formula ZnS. It can display very different colours and appearances depending on its composition, particularly its iron content. Crystals may be brown, black, yellow, honey-coloured or greenish, with a lustre ranging from resinous to highly brilliant. This diversity explains the different names encountered among collectible specimens.

Sphalerite (blende), marmatite and cleophane

The term blende is traditionally used for sphalerite. Marmatite refers to an iron-rich sphalerite, generally characterized by dark brown to black colours. In contrast, cleophane, which is poor in iron, may display lighter colours, including yellow, honey or greenish tones.

Sphalerite crystallizes in the cubic system. Its crystals can develop complex forms and bright faces, sometimes becoming translucent when sufficiently light in colour. These variations in colour and crystallization produce very different specimens depending on their composition and provenance.

Associations with quartz, galena, calcite and chalcopyrite

Sphalerite is frequently found in association with other minerals. In this section, several pieces show associations with quartz, galena, calcite, chalcopyrite or dolomite.

These associations can enrich the overall appearance of a specimen through the combination of different crystals, colours and textures. Some pieces therefore bring together several mineral species on the same matrix.
