Sphalerite (zinc blende, marmatite and cleiophane)

Sphalerite, also known as zinc blende, is a zinc sulphide whose appearance can vary considerably depending on its composition. Marmatite, which is rich in iron, generally displays brown to black tones, while cleiophane, which contains less iron, is often distinguished by lighter colours, sometimes yellow, honey-coloured or greenish.

Sphalerite may display a resinous to adamantine lustre and is frequently associated with quartz, galena, calcite, dolomite or chalcopyrite. These associations create marked contrasts between metallic crystals, pale surfaces and darker tones.
