Galena is a lead sulfide with the chemical formula PbS. It is one of the main sources of lead and is easily recognized by its silvery metallic lustre and cubic crystal structure. 

Crystallizing in the cubic system, galena often presents well-defined cubic crystals, although more complex shapes are also observed. With a hardness of 2.5 to 2.75 on the Mohs scale, galena is relatively soft, but dense, making it heavy for its size. It is highly prized by collectors for its brilliant, well-formed crystals.
