Description

Specimen overview

This substantial specimen combines galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and calcite around a large crystallised central cavity. The dark grey to golden metallic minerals cover much of the surface and display a variety of forms and lustres.

White calcite occurs along several outer areas and inside the cavity. Its pale crystals stand out clearly against the metallic minerals and highlight the different reliefs of the specimen.

The cavity reveals numerous crystals extending into the inner parts of the specimen. With its substantial dimensions and weight of 1.9 kg, this association can be observed from several angles.

Provenance

This specimen comes from the 9 September mine in the Madan mining district, Bulgaria. It was collected in 1991.

Dimensions and presentation

The specimen measures 136 mm in length, 119 mm in width and 95 mm in height.

Weight: 1.9 kg.

The 9 September mine

Also known as Deveti Septemvri and later as Septemvri, this former mine is located in the Madan mining district, in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria. The name “Deveti Septemvri”, meaning “9 September”, was used until 1989.

The mine forms part of the important Madan lead-zinc district, well known among mineral collectors for its galena and sphalerite crystals, often associated with other minerals such as chalcopyrite and calcite.
