Specimen description
This calcite on amethyst specimen comes from Minas Gerais, Brazil, and was collected in the 1990s. It combines a large pale calcite crystal with a dense group of amethyst crystals.
The calcite occupies the right-hand side of the specimen. Part of its surface is covered with very small golden-brown crystals, particularly concentrated across the central area. Several smaller clear or slightly violet crystals are also visible around its base.
The amethyst is mainly developed across the left-hand side and along the lower edge. The crystals vary in size, with several well-defined points surrounded by more closely packed crystallisation. Their colour may appear lighter or deeper depending on their thickness, orientation and the lighting conditions.
Origin: Minas Gerais
Minas Gerais is a state in southeastern Brazil, historically associated with the mining of gold, gemstones and numerous mineral resources. It is particularly well known in mineralogy for the diversity of minerals discovered and extracted there.
Specimen details
The specimen measures 102 mm in length, 68 mm in width and 35 mm in height. It weighs 386 g without a stand.
Mineralogical information
| Calcite | Formula CaCO3 – hardness 3 on the Mohs scale |
| Amethyst | Violet variety of quartz, formula SiO2 – hardness 7 on the Mohs scale |
Care and preservation
As calcite is softer than amethyst, the specimen should be handled carefully and protected from impacts. A soft brush is recommended for removing dust. Avoid acidic cleaning products, which may damage the calcite, as well as prolonged exposure of the amethyst to direct sunlight.
