Aragonite is a crystalline form of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), polymorph of calcite, meaning they share the same chemical composition but have different crystal structures. Aragonite is distinguished by its prismatic, acicular or radial crystals, which sometimes form coralloid aggregates known as aragonite flowers. It is often white to translucent in color, but can also appear in shades of brown, yellow, green or blue, depending on the impurities present.
Aragonite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. With a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, it is relatively brittle. This mineral is prized for its unique crystalline forms.
