Dioptase

Dioptase for sale: green crystals and collector mineral specimens

The dioptase specimens offered on Le Monde Minéral are collector minerals available for sale, selected for their deep green to blue-green colour, clearly visible crystals and mineralogical readability. Each piece is presented with photos and a video, giving a concrete view of the specimen from several angles and helping the visitor make an informed choice before purchase.

The dioptase specimens available for purchase are presented further down this page.

Dioptase is a copper silicate that most often occurs as small prismatic crystals, sometimes forming dense crystal groups, isolated crystals or associations on matrix. Depending on the specimen, its interest may lie in the intensity of the colour, the sharpness of the crystals, the contrast with the matrix or the overall balance of the piece.

Choosing dioptase crystals for a collection

When buying a dioptase specimen, it is useful to compare several visible features. The quality of the crystallisation remains an important criterion: well-individualised crystals, readable faces and clean terminations generally provide a better mineralogical reading of the piece. The condition of the edges also deserves attention, as dioptase is a mineral that should be handled with care.

Colour is another essential point of observation. It can range from deep green to slightly bluish shades, with variations depending on the thickness of the crystals, their transparency and the way light passes through the piece. On some specimens, the vitreous lustre enhances the perception of depth; on others, the density of the crystals or their distribution on the matrix gives the piece its main interest.

What to observe on the pieces offered

The dioptase specimens offered may appear as short crystals, tighter crystal groups or surfaces partially covered with green crystals. For a collection purchase, it is useful to observe the sharpness of the forms, the regularity of the crystallisation, the balance between the dioptase and its matrix, as well as the overall coherence of the specimen. A small, well-crystallised piece may sometimes offer a more interesting reading than a larger but less readable specimen.

Provenance and reading dioptase specimens

The dioptase specimens available in our catalogue mainly come from African deposits, particularly from the Democratic Republic of the Congo depending on the piece. Provenance should not, however, be considered as an isolated criterion: it takes on its full meaning when combined with the concrete observation of the colour, crystallisation, matrix and general condition of the piece.
