Rounded aggregates often associated with epidote

Prehnite is a calcium aluminium silicate that generally forms in fractures and cavities within volcanic or metamorphic rocks. It commonly occurs as globular, botryoidal or mammillary aggregates made up of closely joined rounded growths. Clearly defined individual crystals are less common.

Its colour ranges from very pale green to deeper green, sometimes with yellowish tones. Some specimens show visible translucency around the edges or in thinner areas. In prehnite specimens from Kayes, epidote may occur as dark, elongated crystals resting on the prehnite or partly enclosed within the rounded aggregates.

Choosing prehnite for a mineral collection

When comparing prehnite specimens, useful features to examine include the regularity of the rounded growths, the distribution of colour, translucency, surface condition and the way the mineral develops across its matrix. Where epidote is present, the position and definition of its crystals, together with their contrast against the prehnite, can significantly influence the visual balance of the specimen.

Uniform colour is therefore not the only point to consider. The overall shape, surface relief, mineral association, provenance and balance of the piece can distinguish very different specimens within the same mineral species.
