Dioptase belongs to the silicate class and is distinguished by its chemical composition comprising copper, silicon, oxygen and hydrogen: its chemical formula is Cu₆Si₆O₁₈ - 6H₂O,
In terms of physical properties, dioptase has a hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale. Its density varies between 3.28 and 3.35.
Originally, dioptase was confused with emerald when it was first discovered, due to its characteristic emerald-green hue. It was only later that scientists realized it was a completely new mineral, rich in copper and distinct from green gems like emerald.
