The Valzergues mine in Aveyron is renowned for its fluorite deposit, also known as spath-fluorite. Discovered in 1926 by Victor Lassalle, a prospector from Clermont-Ferrand, the mine was operated by various companies until 1970.

The site includes several veins, including the “yellow vein” near the hamlet of Nespoulières, known for its amber-yellow fluorite crystals, sometimes zoned blue. These specimens are world-renowned among collectors.

The fluorite extracted was mainly used in the metallurgical industry, notably to lower the temperature of slag in blast furnaces. It was also used in the chemical, ceramics and glass industries, as well as in the production of cement and abrasives.

Despite its potential, the mine experienced intermittent periods of activity due to economic and technical difficulties. It ceased operations for good in 1970. Today, the site is abandoned and considered dangerous, with access forbidden to the public.
