  Crocoïte

Chemical composition: Crocoïte's chemical formula is PbCrO₄ (lead chromate). It is composed mainly of lead and chromium.

Hardness: On the Mohs scale, crocodite has a relatively low hardness of between 2.5 and 3, making it quite brittle.

Density: The density of crocoite varies between 5.9 and 6.1 g/cm³, making it a fairly heavy mineral due to its high lead content.

The Dundas mine, located in Tasmania, is world-renowned as one of the world's most important sites for crocoite, the bright reddish-orange mineral composed of lead chromate.

The Dundas region began to attract the attention of prospectors in the late 19th century, in the 1890s, due to the discovery of deposits rich in lead and silver.

It was in this area that crocoite deposits were discovered, but this mineral was of limited mineralogical interest at the time. Over time, Dundas crocoite became highly prized by collectors.
