The Esterel massif is located in the Var department, close to the Côte d'Azur. This geological site is best known for its lithophyses, rock formations resulting from ancient volcanic activity. These geological structures were formed several million years ago when molten lava flows came into contact with seawater, causing rapid cooling and the formation of gaseous cavities within the rock. These cavities were then progressively filled by mineral deposits from solutions rich in silica and other elements, which explains their characteristic shapes and varied shades, from dark red to light pink. Over time, natural erosion processes have revealed these remarkable structures.
