Density: barite is known for its high density, typically around 4.5 g/cm³, making it much heavier than most other minerals. It takes its name from the Greek "barus", meaning "heavy", in reference to this high density.  

Colour: Barite can vary in colour, including white, yellow, blue, grey and even brown.

Hardness: On the Mohs scale, barite has a hardness of 3 to 3.5, making it relatively soft and easy to scratch with harder materials.
