Stories and legends associated with quartz

• The ancient Greeks believed that transparent quartz was eternal ice sent by the gods. The word "crystal" derives from the Greek word "krystallos", meaning "ice". It was thought that the gods had transformed water into quartz to create a form of ice that would never melt.
• The ancient Egyptians used quartz to make amulets and talismans. They believed that quartz had the power to ward off evil spirits and protect the souls of the deceased in the afterlife. Quartz scarabs were often placed in tombs to protect the dead.
• Quartz crystal balls have a long association with divination. Used by clairvoyants and mediums, they were believed to enable people to see the future or receive spiritual messages. This practice is known as "crystallomancy". The first crystal balls date back to Roman times, but they were popularised in Europe in the Middle Ages.
