Fluorite is composed of calcium fluoride. Its chemical composition is CaF2.
Its hardness is 4 on the Mohs scale (can be scratched with a knife). Its density is 3.8 (3.8 times heavier than its equivalent volume of water).
It is also a mineral that reacts to acids.

Roman legend...
According to Roman legend, the emperor Nero owned a large vase made of fluorite, which he used for drinking. This vase was reputed to be incredibly beautiful because of the shimmering colours of the fluorite. It is said that Nero was so fascinated by this vase that he used it on a daily basis.
