The lithophyses of the Esterel massif, in the Var region of France, often appear as geodes as a result of complex geological processes that took place over millions of years. Initially, the Esterel massif was subject to intense volcanic activity. As molten magma rose near the surface, it encountered seawater reservoirs, triggering hydrothermal explosions. These explosions projected magma to the surface, where it rapidly cooled on contact with water, forming cavities in the volcanic rock.
