Aquamarine, a variety of beryl, is often associated with maritime legends and stories because of its ocean-like colour. One of the most interesting anecdotes about aquamarine concerns its use by ancient sailors.
The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that aquamarine was a sacred stone of Poseidon (or Neptune for the Romans), the god of the sea. They believed it had the power to protect sailors and ensure a safe and secure voyage on stormy waters. Sailors often wore aquamarine amulets or threw pieces into the sea to appease the sea gods and calm storms.
The stone was also used as a talisman to prevent seasickness, a common problem for sailors and travellers at the time.
