Barite from Spain (old collection)
Barite, also known as baryte, is a mineral consisting mainly of barium sulphate (BaSO4). Its hardness ranges from 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale and its density is 4.48 (its weight is 4.48 times heavier than its same volume of water).
It is or has been used in many industries, including the chemical, petroleum, paint, medical and nuclear industries, as well as in the manufacture of glass.
Stone dimensions: L: 37mm x W: 31mm x H : 64mm x weight with base: 223g.
Use in fireworks: An interesting anecdote concerns the use of barite in fireworks. Barite is used to create brilliant green colours, and it is often said that the most impressive pyrotechnic displays owe their brilliance to this mineral.
