Chemical composition: Malachite is a basic copper carbonate, with the chemical formula Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂. It consists of copper, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, and derives its intense green color from copper ions. Hardness: On the Mohs scale, malachite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4. Density: Malachite's density varies between 3.6 and 4 g/cm³, making it a rather dense mineral, especially due to its copper content. |
Malachite stalactites form in caves, mainly in copper-rich environments. This process occurs when copper-laden water seeps through cracks in the rock. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind malachite deposits in the form of stalactites. These elongated structures can grow very slowly.
Malachite was also used as a green pigment in art until the advent of synthetic pigments in the 19th century.
