Azurite is a mineral belonging to the copper carbonate family, with a chemical formula of Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2.
Its intense blue colour is due to the presence of copper ions. When polished, as in the case of this piece, it often reveals internal patterns and veins that can range from light to dark blue, sometimes with white or black inclusions.
In ancient times, azurite was known for its powerful symbolic properties. Its deep blue colour was associated with the sky and the gods, and it was used to make pigments for works of art and sacred objects. The Egyptians, for example, used azurite in powder form as a pigment for paint and make-up, believing that it opened the mind to higher spiritual dimensions.
