The lithophyses of the Esterel massif, in the Var region of France, often take the form of geodes due to geological processes that took place over millions of years. This volcanic massif was marked by intense magmatic activity. As magma rose to the surface, gas bubbles formed and were trapped inside the cooling lava, creating cavities in the volcanic rock.
Over time, these cavities were filled with minerals from hydrothermal solutions flowing through the rock, such as calcite, quartz and various iron oxides. These minerals were deposited on the inner walls, forming layers of crystals. Gradually, erosion processes exposed these crystalline cavities to the surface, exposing the geodes by degrading the surrounding rocks.
