Specimen overview

This specimen combines numerous stibnite crystals with clear calcite crystallisation. The stibnite crystals are elongated, striated and lustrous, with a steel-grey metallic sheen. They form radiating clusters and bundles across a large part of the specimen.

The main face displays several groups of well-defined crystals, particularly in the central area and along the sides. In the upper part, the calcite forms a coating of small, clear and sparkling crystals. The matrix also shows brown and ochre tones.

The reverse side reveals a different arrangement, with a broad bundle of stibnite crystals in the lower section and further crystal groups distributed among the calcite and matrix.

Provenance

This association of stibnite and calcite comes from the Cavnic mine, in the historic Maramureș mining district of Romania. Worked for several centuries, this locality is renowned for the diversity and quality of the mineral specimens recovered there. The specimen was collected in 2000.

The specimen measures 40 mm in length, 27 mm in width and 70 mm in height, excluding the stand.
