Fluorite, also known as fluorspar, is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride.
It crystallizes in a cubic system: this means its crystals often take the shape of well-defined cubes, sometimes stacked or clustered together.
Specimens from Hunan (China) are known for the sharpness of their cubes and their beautiful colors. Fluorite is indeed a multicolored mineral: it can be found in purple, green, blue, yellow, or even colorless varieties.
An important point: fluorite has perfect cleavage. This means it easily breaks along certain internal directions, producing fragments with regular shapes (such as cubes or octahedra). Therefore, it must be handled carefully to avoid shocks.
Another particularity: fluorite is often fluorescent under UV (ultraviolet) light. It can glow blue or violet depending on the impurities present in the crystal. This is a feature highly appreciated by collectors.
The stone rests on a matrix, which is the host rock that supported its formation.
