Description of the piece
This topaz from Brazil, collected in 2003 and originating from an old collection, features a clear main crystal positioned at the top of a golden-brown matrix with a layered surface.
The crystal displays a very pale yellow colour and several clearly visible flat faces. Some areas appear transparent, while others are cloudier within the crystal. The topaz stands well above its matrix, allowing its form to be viewed from several angles.
Mineralogical characteristics of topaz
Topaz is an aluminium silicate containing fluorine and hydroxyl groups, with the chemical formula Al2SiO4(F,OH)2. It belongs to the nesosilicate group and crystallises in the orthorhombic system. Its lustre is generally vitreous, and its transparency can range from transparent to translucent.
With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, topaz is highly resistant to scratching. However, this mineral species has perfect basal cleavage: its crystal structure contains a preferred plane, parallel to the base of the crystal, along which breakage can occur more easily if the stone receives an impact. This general property does not mean that this particular piece has a visible fracture or cleavage.
Origin and collection date
The documented origin of this piece is Brazil. The topaz was collected in 2003 before being preserved in an old collection.
Dimensions and presentation
The mineral measures 32 mm wide and 35 mm high. These dimensions refer only to the stone. The total weight is 35 g including the acrylic base.
