What is window quartz?
Window quartz, also known as fenster quartz, is not a separate mineral species. It is a skeletal growth form of quartz and retains the usual composition of quartz, silicon dioxide (SiO2).
During its formation, the crystal edges grow more rapidly than the centres of some faces. These faces remain partly incomplete, producing recessed areas, stepped surfaces and raised outlines. These structures resemble frames or small windows, which explains the name given to this growth form.
The German word Fenster means “window”. The term therefore describes the crystal’s growth morphology rather than a particular degree of transparency. Window quartz may be transparent, translucent, milky or smoky.
The recessed and stepped areas visible on the crystal are not necessarily signs of damage: they may be natural growth features.
