Specimen overview

This specimen from Kayes, Mali, is dominated by a large green garnet crystal with well-developed faces. Its colour ranges from olive green to brownish green depending on the angle of the light, while its vitreous lustre highlights the surface relief and the growth lines visible on several faces. A smaller crystal is set on the upper part of the main crystal.

The garnet rests on a pale matrix largely covered with white crystallisations, together with a few small green crystals. The contrast between the dark, lustrous main crystal and the lighter matrix emphasises the relief of the specimen. The video provides a clearer view of its crystallisation from different angles.
