Specimen overview

This green garnet specimen from Kayes displays several crystals on a pale matrix, dominated by two large adjoining crystals. Their colour ranges from olive green to yellowish green, with lighter areas where light passes through the thinner parts of the crystals.

The broad lustrous faces and well-defined edges clearly reveal the polyhedral geometry of the garnets. The matrix is partly covered with smaller white to pale green crystals, creating a distinct contrast in both colour and texture with the main crystals.

The largest garnet measures approximately 32 × 28 mm. The dimensions of the specimen, excluding the base, are 60 × 40 × 38 mm. Its weight is 150 g with the base.

This specimen comes from the Kayes Region in western Mali. Garnet belongs to a group of silicate minerals that generally crystallise in the cubic system, producing the characteristic geometric forms that are particularly easy to observe on this specimen.
