Description

Description of the rhodochrosite specimen

This piece of pale pink rhodochrosite comes from the Batanzi mine, located in the Madan mining district in southern Bulgaria. Exploited for several decades for its lead and zinc deposits, this mine also produced, during the 1990s, beautiful rhodochrosite specimens often associated with crystalline quartz.

The specimen, dated 1991, displays wavy and satiny formations typical of the secondary crystallizations from this locality. Fine transparent quartz crystals have developed on the surface, creating a delicate contrast between the soft pink hue of the rhodochrosite and the sparkle of the quartz.

Bulgarian rhodochrosites are characterized by their gentler tones compared to those from Argentina or Peru, which are usually more vivid. Their color is due to the presence of manganese, a key component of this carbonate.

Because of its soft composition (hardness: 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale), rhodochrosite should be handled carefully. It is advisable to avoid contact with water or cleaning agents, and to use dry dusting with a soft brush instead.

Displayed specimen: Batanzi mine (Bulgaria), 1991 – 42 mm × 32 mm.
