Specimen description (Kolwezite & Quartz – DRC)
This specimen features small green kolwezite spherules distributed within a cavity lined with quartz microcrystals. The piece has an open geode-like structure: its inner walls are covered with a fine druse that produces a subtle sparkle when touched by the light, while the characteristic tufts of kolwezite provide a contrasting texture.

Kolwezite generally forms within the oxidation zone of copper deposits in the Kolwezi district (Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo). Rounded crystal aggregates such as those visible on this specimen often develop in copper- and cobalt-rich environments, where circulating solutions promote fibrous or radiating growths.
Care instructions
As kolwezite is more susceptible to scratching than quartz, direct rubbing of the green aggregates should be avoided. To remove dust from the cavity, use a very soft brush or a photographic air blower. Pressurised water, acidic products and stiff brushes should be avoided, as they may damage the fibrous surface.
