About this specimen
This malachite geode from Shaba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, displays an open cavity extensively lined with green malachite.
The interior of the geode shows numerous botryoidal aggregates, with rounded forms of different sizes standing out against the darker matrix. Finer crystallized areas occur between these rounded structures, giving the specimen a particularly rich texture.
The shades of green vary with the relief and lighting, from lighter areas to deeper green tones. The open form of the geode provides a direct view of the distribution of the malachite and the relief of the crystallization. Malachite and botryoidal crystallization
Malachite, Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂, is a copper carbonate hydroxide. It commonly forms in the oxidation zones of copper deposits and frequently develops botryoidal structures composed of rounded aggregates that may form crusts or line cavities.
This morphology is particularly well represented in this specimen, where the globular forms remain clearly individualized inside the geode.
Provenance – Shaba, DR Congo
This specimen comes from Shaba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, a region historically renowned for its important copper mineralization and for the diversity of secondary copper minerals found there. It was collected in 2023.
The name Shaba is the former name of Katanga and is still frequently used as a locality designation on mineral labels and in collections.
