Specimen overview

This hematoid quartz on fluorite specimen from France displays abundant quartz crystallisation ranging from red-orange to reddish brown. Numerous crystals cover a large part of the surface, creating a dense and irregular relief.

The main face primarily highlights the hematoid quartz, while the opposite side reveals more of the translucent pale green fluorite, visible beneath and between the quartz crystals. The two views clearly show the structure of the association and the way the two minerals are closely intergrown.

What is hematoid quartz?

Hematoid quartz is quartz whose red, orange or reddish-brown colours are caused by the presence of iron oxides, particularly hematite, occurring as inclusions or deposits within and on the crystals. This natural colouring gives it a very different appearance from typical colourless quartz.
