Galena

Galena is a lead sulfide with the chemical formula PbS. It belongs to the sulfide mineral group and is the main natural ore of lead. In mineral collecting, galena is valued for its metallic lustre, its noticeably high density, and its cubic crystal system, which may appear as well-defined geometric forms (cubes, cube–octahedron combinations) or as more compact aggregates depending on the specimen’s habit.

The galena specimens shown below illustrate this variety of appearances and geological settings: shapes, tones, localities, and mineral associations.

A significant share of the galena currently listed in our catalogue comes from Bulgaria, including the Zlatograd mining district, where galena is often found with other polymetallic sulfides on quartz or carbonate matrix.

Identification criteria

Galena has a low hardness (2.5 to 2.75 on the Mohs scale), making it relatively soft. Its most diagnostic feature is a perfect cubic cleavage, which can produce flat surfaces meeting at right angles. Its density (around 7.5) is immediately noticeable in hand: the mineral feels heavy for its size.

Visually, galena typically shows lead-grey to silvery-grey tones with a strong metallic sheen. Crystal faces may display growth striations. The habit ranges from isolated crystals to compact masses; opacity and reflectivity help distinguish it from many non-metallic minerals.

Observable variations and causes

Differences between galena specimens are mainly linked to morphology and surface condition. Some pieces show crisp geometric crystals, while others are more massive. Changes in growth conditions can modify edge sharpness or produce combined forms. Slight surface dulling or secondary deposits can occur over time due to natural ageing, without changing the identification of galena as the main mineral.

Geological setting and typical associations

Galena forms primarily in hydrothermal ore systems within mineralized veins. In the specimens offered for sale, it is commonly found in association with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (formerly known as blende), sometimes as the pale variety called cleiophane, as well as with quartz or calcite. These mineral assemblages (paragenesis) are typical of polymetallic environments where several sulfides can crystallize within the same fluid system.

For collectors looking for reliable reference specimens in mineral sales, galena stands out through clear identification markers (cleavage, density, lustre) and frequent associations that help read the geological context of a piece.
