Specimen overview
This beautiful baryte from the Fontsante Mine in the Var department, France, displays a vertical arrangement of numerous elongated tabular crystals, grouped in sprays and positioned parallel to one another or at slightly different angles.
The crystals are mainly white to colourless, with varying degrees of transparency depending on their thickness. Several large translucent blades stand out clearly on the main face, while finer crystals occupy the spaces between them and the lower part of the specimen. Their flat faces and well-defined edges give the piece a strongly architectural appearance.
The side view reveals thicker crystals and provides a clearer look at their layered arrangement. Some areas also show slight yellow to orange tones, particularly visible on one face. The video highlights the depth of the crystallisation and the arrangement of the different blades across the specimen.
Provenance
This baryte comes from the Fontsante Mine, located near Tanneron in the Var department of France. It was collected in 1983.
Fontsante was primarily a fluorite mine operated during the twentieth century. This French mineral locality is also known for baryte, quartz and several other species associated with fluorite, examples of which are also offered on our website.
Dimensions
The specimen measures 62 mm wide × 100 mm high and weighs 550 g.
